Star Wars Rebels S2E13: “The Mystery of Chopper Base”
As season 2 draws to a close, it looks like we may be seeing the last of the Ghost’s crew in its current incarnation. This episode drops many hints at what may be to come and much isn’t good. This episode also seemed to rip a lot of sci fi trope here as well but all for the greater good of setting up the finale.
Practice, Practice, Practice!
It looks like Kanan has taken his training duty to Ezra very seriously as we start off with the two engaged in a lightsaber duel. Ezra, sorry but no amount of 80’s Rocky montages will save you from the Inquisitors! Even in dueling Kanan, Ezra seemingly gets the upper hand on Kanan only to find that Kanan could have gutted him like a fish. Even though Ezra, calls it a tie, Kanan tells him there is no such thing. If you listen to the tone of the conversation, the cadence is darker. Ezra believes that killing the Inquisitors is the way to win while Kanan disagrees. I was surprised actually that Kanan didn’t rebuke Ezra even more for that remark as it sounds like a very Sithy thing to consider.
Home Sweet Deadly Home
If you thought Hoth was bad with a rampant Wampa problem, Attolon is worse. While out placing sensor markers, one of the Rebel pilots (and ummm…did anyone note that she is in a red uniform? Star Trek redshirt much, Star Wars?) runs across a large spider-like predator called Krykna (now we are giving a nod to Starship Troopers) that seems impervious to blaster fire. So, look: someone needs to really get into a conversation with the Rebel Alliance’s realtor because they seem to do a poor job with finding adequate real estate without monster infestation!
First the Beatles break up…now this.
Kanan tells Hera that he Ezra and Ahsoka will be leaving for Malachor soon to face the Inquisitors. Hera isn’t so happy about this and what I find suspect about Hera is in her selfishness to wanting to keep Kanan around, there have been a few times that she was willing to sacrifice leaving team mates around to help the greater good of the Rebellion. So wait, it’s ok for her to want to do it but when someone wants to bounce and do something for the cause, it’s not ok? That’s not how it works Hera!
If it bleeds we can kill it – maybe.
Eventually, the Ghost’s crew goes out to hunt down the missing Rebel redshi…errrm…pilot and run across the Krykna. As they go searching for Sabine and Rex, who had gone missing, they all split up with Hera sending Ezra and Kanan on their own as she attempts to get the crew adjusted to life without the Jedi. They eventually rescue Rex who is in a cage and area reminiscent of Aliens. Gee…we are just straight ripping off sci-fi tropes this episode aren’t we? Not to mention, it seems like the crew just gave up on the redshi…sorry, missing rebel pilot as they make their escape. Eventually, Rex’s discovery that their eyes are a weakness helps the Ghost’s crew but not only are they surrounded; the creatures also have webbed the ship to the ground.
X marks the spot.
The crew eventually decides that they only way they can escape is by cutting the webbing and Sabine realizes that the Krykna are afraid of the sensor markers. Heading out, Ezra and Kanan force fling Sabine towards the marker (I would like to think of this as a Force Fastball Special. Let’s see how many X-men fans get the reference!) and she overshoots it. Once she obtains the marker, the two Jedi frees the Ghost and eventually they all get away.
Just get a room already!!!
Once the crew is back and safe, the Rebels create a fence using the sensor markers to keep the Krykna out. As the set up completes, Kanan engages with Hera again about the Jedi’s impending departure. This is perhaps the first real time that we can see that there may be more to the two than meets the eye and why Hera is more concerned than ever about what Kanan is going off to face. Her concern is deep, especially since he seems resigned to the idea that they may not be returning.
Meanwhile Ezra is attempting to use the Force to communicate with the Krykna (he tried earlier to no avail) and even with the sensor markers up, the creatures are just not having it. Ahsoka talks to him about his failure at the attempt and lets him know that the Force is not always as it seems. “In my experience, just when you think you understand the Force, you find out how little you actually know,” she says. Sounds a bit prophetic and it’s doesn’t help that bars from the Imperial March plays as the episode ends.
But wait, just one more thing!
You remembered to stick around for next week’s preview right? If you did, then you saw this!

Also, anyone else got the feeling that Ahsoka is not going to make it out of this season?
