There has been an awakening…in my wallet

While the release date of the Digital (April 1st) and Blu-Ray/DVD (April 5th) editions of Star Wars:The Force Awakens have been out there since the end of January, today we got some new details on content, special retailer-specific packaging, and retailer-specific bonus content that will be available with the release. According to Star Wars.com, Target, Walmart, and Best Buy, retailers will each be getting their own exclusive packaging, while it seems that only Target and Walmart are getting additional bonus content.

The retailer exclusives include an additional 20 minutes of bonus content; including interviews and behind-the-scenes for Target , special BB-8 packaging and an “exclusive Star Wars Galactic Connexions trading disc” for Walmart, and Steelbook packaging for Best Buy. As of now, all of these are only part of the Blu-ray + DVD + Digital HD Combo Packs. There was no word on whether or not other major retailers like Amazon.com or Costco (two of the largest retailers of DVDs and Blu-ray’s in the country) will be having their own exclusive materials at some point, but it would not be too surprising if Amazon ended up with some additional content.

According to Star Wars.com all of the combo packs will have the following additional materials:

  • Secrets of The Force Awakens: A Cinematic Journey – For the first time, discover the complete story behind the making of The Force Awakens, revealed through in-depth footage and exclusive interviews with the actors and filmmakers in this feature documentary
  • The Story Awakens: The Table Read – Cast members familiar and new reflect on the memorable day they all first came together to read the movie’s script.
  • Building BB-8 – See how the filmmakers brought the newest droid to the screen, creating an instant fan favorite in the Star Wars universe
  • Crafting Creatures – Watch movie magic as the filmmakers bring a cast of new creatures to life
  • Blueprint of a Battle: The Snow Fight – Go deeper into the epic, climactic lightsaber battle between Rey and Kylo Ren
  • John Williams: The Seventh Symphony – The legendary composer shares personal insights of his work on Star Wars and The Force Awakens
  • ILM: The Visual Magic of The Force – An insider’s look into the remarkable digital artistry of the movie’s visual effects.
  • Force For Change – Heroes come in all shapes and sizes. See how the Star Wars: Force for Change initiative has united Star Wars fans all over the globe to help others
  • Plus Deleted Scenes
    • Digital bonus offerings may vary by retailer.

Star Wars: The Force Awakens broke nearly every box office record upon its release on December 17, 2015 and has continued in top 10 box office well into late February, the soundtrack set similar records for downloads and sales, and there is no reason to think that the home video release may not do the same thing. We can only hope that this bodes well for the rumors of a home video release of the original theatrical versions of the Original Trilogy films, A New Hope, The Empire Strikes Back, and Return of the Jedi.

Pre-ordering is up on Target and Best Buy’s websites, but not on Walmart’s, as of this writing.

Star Wars: The Force Awakens, is Directed by J.J. Abrams, and released by LucasFilm Limited, a subsidiary of Disney.
