Ouran High School Host Club – Gender Neutral is the new frontier

This is a review on why Ouran High School Host Club is an important anime to watch

Anime is one of those mediums that people tend to think of as a ‘geeky’ thing that ‘geeks’ do. However, I think that anime is one of the coolest forms of entertainment that I have ever experienced. Almost every anime tackles incredibly deep issues that most movies are just starting to acknowledge.

I very much love the show Ouran High School Host Club. It tackles so many problems – class, money, sexuality, how to treat women. However, in my opinion the most important issue is the gender neutral lead character, Haruhi Fujioka

When you first meet Haruhi, you think that she is a boy. She disguises herself as a man because she doesn’t like the labels that come behind being a female. She joins the Ouran High school Host Club in order to pay off a debt. The way that she describes it is as such:

“I don’t really care whether you guys recognize me as a boy or a girl, in my opinion it’s more important for a person to be recognized for who they are rather than what sex they are.”

This is one of my absolute favorite shows, and I’ve seen it all the way through three or four times now. I am not gender neutral, but I do defy a lot of gender norms in the way I dress and act. This show was one I watched in high school that genuinely made me feel like it was okay for me to embrace the aspects of myself that were less girly and more masculine traditionally.

It is so very important that people recognize that gender norms are a very society run concept and that there is no reason for people to have to stick within a specific gender. It is also very important to understand that sex and gender are two different things. When her Senpai asked if Haruhi was a girl, she responded, “biologically speaking, yeah.” Biologically, someone can be a girl or a boy, but that does not mean that their gender is the same as their biology.

This show explains that you should like what you like as a human rather than as a gender and for that reason I really think that everyone should watch it. I give it 5 out of 5 stars.
