Dear Arrow…goodbye

Arrow finally found the straw that broke the camel’s back…

Amanda Waller and The Suicide Squad Arrow The CW

Hey Arrow, it’s me.

I’m here because tonight I realized it’s time for me to leave. This is a toxic relationship, one in which you constantly apologize for your behavior and then turn around and do the horrible thing you did before but somehow make it 10x worse. It’s not healthy and so I’m severing our ties.

You may wonder what was the thing that pushed me over the edge, and while I can say it was several awful things over the course of your four year run tonight’s episode, in which you brutally murdered Amanda Waller, the Nick Fury of not only the Arrowverse but of DC Comics; one of the few truly badass characters on your show and one of two women of color was the final straw.

You see I held on through Laurel, Thea, Nyssa, Roy and Helena being shoved to the side or utterly off the show in favor of Felicity Sue, a character who isn’t actually a character but a collection of tics and storylines from other better characters; who was willing to kill an entire city to save her current slampiece; who used her previous slampiece’s death and all the money she inherited from him as way to finance her lifestyle with her current fling. I hung in through her single handedly destroying Palmer Technologies and being told she was good at her job while every single piece of evidence on film said the opposite.

I hung in through Ray Palmer, a member of the mothereffing  Justice League, being nothing more than a prop for Olicity. Then there is the cumbersome and boring set-up for Legends of Tomorrow that is glaringly awful especially as Birds Of Prey would have been the next organic choice, what with half of the characters already being on the show. I’ve put up with continual piss poor writing and fan pandering and being told, not shown, that Oliver was a hero when everything he actually does is self destructive, self-absorbed and endangers the people he supposedly cares about leading to death after death after death.

But tonight’s killing of Waller, the leaving of her body as if she were trash, the fact that you had Felicity Sue mock this amazing character, this woman of color, who was willing to do what needed to be done to protect the planet, not just the people she gave a damn about, was all too much.

Between this and Professor Roofie-Rape ™  over on Legends I’m fairly certain that Guggenheim and company don’t understand just how racist and sexist their writing is.

But I do.

So goodbye Arrow, kindly go away forever.

No love,

Me

  1. Of course, always pulling the race card. Should I get offended that you called Victor Garber, an older white male, Professor Roofie Rape? Get over yourself, it’s not always about race.

  2. Yeeeaaah, I’m in total agreement here. Arrow officially sucks. It has always struck me as a kids show that’s trying to be grown up and continually fails.

    • Is he a Professor? Did he drug someone’s drink to knock them out and make them do something against their will (Jay Jackson said explicitly that he did NOT want to join the group only to be drugged because “it was for his own good”)? Then the name stands.

As she says in the article, this is the final straw. This is not a “I love everything about this show but they killed a black person so I’m out!” reaction. This is a “you’ve been trying my patience for a while and now you’ve gone too far so I’m gonna go now” reaction. TL;DR – you are right, it’s not always about race. It’s just part of the milieu of suck that Arrow has become. Maybe you should get over YOURSELF and try applying a little reading comprehension before you cry about your wounded white privilege.

  3. I just find it interesting that the white Felicity Smoak, who actually is a character created back in 1984 in the comics and is fairly consistent with her, is dismissed out of hand as a Mary Sue, whereas Amanda Waller, who bore no resemblance to her comic book version at least in term of physicality, has your allegiance to the point where you’ll walk on the show because they killed her off…even though she is in the “Suicide Squad” movie. Okay.

    • With all due respect Mr. David I too echo the sentiments of Ron Burr. Its not JUST about Amanda Waller. Ms. Burr clearly pointed out other issues with the show as well as her issue with Amanda Waller being killed off. Dont isolate one thing without reading the rest.

  4. Arrow season one to one and a half – pretty excellent. Unbelievable fight sequencing, pretty solid character building (Tommy and Merlin was solid). Now, the best thing I can say about it is I love that Arrow gave us Flash. I’ll still watch, but non-committally catching up every now and again. I only hope Waller’s death will lead to her aunt Waller appearing as the no nonsense full bodied original type.

  5. Okay, you gotta stop for a second and remember this is Amanda Waller we are talking about, and she deserves absolutely no sympathy. SHe’s not some great hero like you’re making her out to be. She’s an anti-hero. A manipulative bitch who is really good at getting her way. Did killing her go completely against her character, the person who usually survives, yes. But they did that long ago when they made her skinny. She was perfect on Smallville. But that’s not the point.

Seems a silly reason to stop watching, so much of the show is entertaining.

  6. They killed her off on Arrow for only one reason and that’s because of the movie just as they had to with Deadshot. I’m sure the decision was out of their hands, next up could be Katana.

  9. Wow… How about the fact that the Amanda Waller character in Arrow is nothing like the character she was based on and the story actually gives a major black character something more to do than be support for the Arrow team? How about it being a fitting end for the New 52 based character that was a thinly veiled (pun intended) version of the original big berth that made even Batman nervous? Your anger is misplaced and unworthy and the show will most likely be fine without your support.

How about you focus your anger equally and be asking why they “blackwashed” Floyd “Deadshot” Lawton by having Will Smith play a long time established WHITE character… This article is just poorly thought out and another excuse to bitch about not getting things your way.

  10. You got to blame the DCEU and their upcoming movie Suicide Squad for the reason they were (more than likely) forced to kill of Waller in the TV series. Same reason why Deadshot was killed and they stopped doing Suicide Squad episodes. WB which owns the DC properties as well as owning CW made it a point to the show producers as to who is allowed and aren’t allowed in the DCTV universe. In fact, the only reason Ray Palmer as the Atom even existed because WB told the show producers they aren’t allowed to have the Blue Beetle, as well as the main reason why Felicity isn’t called the Oracle is like they humorously stated, it’s “taken”.

Even though you anger feels trivial considering this show’s Amanda Waller isn’t even a regular character and only a recurring one, don’t put that anger solely onto the show itself and more towards WB and its executive overrulings.
