Best Of the Best: Royal Rumble 2003

We are currently on the Road to Wrestlemania and the first stop is the biggest Brawl of them all the Royal Rumble.  In celebration of the 2016 Rumble coming this Sunday, I was asked to present my favorite Rumble.  I absolutely love Royal Rumble 2003 PPV. Most of the matches were great and the Rumble itself was one of the most fun I have ever seen. Not every match were winners but Overall it was an incredibly enjoyable PPV. It also has the distinction of having – in my opinion – one of the Best Matches in WWE History. Before I get to that let me tell you my highlights of the PPV:

Lesner wants to be in the Royal Rumble to once again have a shot at WWE Gold at Wrestlemania. But Big Show had other plans, he also wanted gold and to end Lesner. Leading us to Royal Rumble, this match would be for the last slot in the Rumble. The two mega powers went at it in very entertaining match leading to the Lesner Victory and his Shot in the Rumble and Rumble Victory. Show and Lesner made the most of their short time and put on a great match.

“Big Poppa Pump” Scott Steiner has come to the WWE with one thing on his mind Championship Gold. Too bad the one holding said gold was none other than “The Game” Triple H. Steiner gets his World Heavyweight Title match against Triple H. The match was a straight up brawl with Triple H being overwhelmed by Steiner’s strength throughout.  Yet Triple H manages to win the battle but not the war as Steiner proceeds to destroy Triple H after the match.  This match was brutal, from the blows tha each men traded to how Steiner man handled the Game. It was something to watch. Where this match lacked finesse it made up for in entertainment.

The Royal Rumble match was a testament that if you put in the ring a bunch of high fliers and just highly athletic wrestlers, you are going to see some wonderful spots being pulled off. This Rumble was high octane excitement from beginning to end; I mean it began and ended with surprises. The Rumble also boasted had many great Spots, it had multiple faux eliminations highflying moves and some incredible sequences you have to see to believe.

Yet what I remembered most was The Champion Kurt Angle vs the Challenger Chris Benoit for the WWE Title.  There are some rivalries no matter how many times they fight it’s like watching the competitors fight for the first time. The match had it all running for about 20min, from highflying moves and to submissions they threw everything at each other. In the end Angle retained the Title through submission.

After Angle left and Chris Benoit was alone in the ring. The entire arena stood up and chanted “Thank you Benoit” to Chris after the match because it was just that amazing performance he and Angle put on. That full match and that crowd response they stole the PPV and that’s why I think it’s one of the Best matches in WWE history.
