It is once again to play the music….a Muppet show for a new generation! ABC has brought the iconic characters back to television hoping to capitalize on the success the recent motion pictures have enjoyed. Kermit, Miss Piggy, Fozzie Bear and the rest of the gang are back along with some big name Hollywood stars to bring the funny back.
ABC wants to produce a documentary on the behind the scenes work of The Muppet Show. Kermit agrees to allow the cameras in for the public to get a glimpse of the day to day operations of the variety show and a peek at the personal lives of the Muppets as well. As has been teased all summer, we enter to find that Kermit and Piggy have broken off their long relationship and Mr. The Frog has found a new lady love, Denise. Like Piggy, Denise is also a member of the swine family, which prompts Kermit to admit on camera that he has a thing for pigs. Fozzie Bear is also trying to make a inter-species coupling work with his human girlfriend Becky (Margo Harshman) whose parents do not approve. Elizabeth Banks guest stars as herself and an interviewee for Miss Piggy but Piggy holds a secret grudge against Banks. Tom Bergeron of Dancing With The Stars and AFV has a humorous cameo as well. However the funniest lines of the night were uttered by unlikely sources, the ever faith Scooter and the ever maniacal Animal.
Anyone familiar with Modern Family will immediately recognize the mockumentary style of the show with candid camera takes and sit down confessionals to the camera. While there is the obvious “been there, done that” vibe to the format, The Muppets pull it off flawlessly with the unexpected deadpan of interviews and a much more profound and borderline profane sampling of the off-color jokes that are not meant for the studio audience.
I grew up watching the Muppet Show and was blown away by the humor, the guest stars and the music. As time passes, the old favorites of childhood fade into memory but with the film reboots and now the weekly sitcom, The Muppets have made me feel the magic of youth once more.
