Some Upcoming TV Previews

We are slowly but surely heading into the latter part of the year and September signals the start of new and returning TV programs.  Before most of the new fall shows premier, late summer also may have a few gems. This fall’s line up looks pretty promising as there are a lot of shows coming for the geek minded TV watcher.  Some of us here at PCU decided to talk about some of the shows that will be appearing soon and tell you why we are excited.

Fear the Walking Dead
August 23rd, 2015
9:00 PM EST
AMC

Plot summary: Set in the same time frame as The Walking Dead, Fear The Walking Dead takes place in Los Angeles at the beginning of the outbreak. It follows the lives of divorced teacher Travis Manawa (Cliff Curtis) and his fiancée and single mother Madison Clark (Kim Dickens), the drama that surrounds their respective children and coming to grips with the epidemic.

Why I am excited: What interests me most about FTWD is the unknown. I am an avid reader of the Robert Kirkland comic book, The Walking Dead, and while the television series has not stayed true to course with some details the overall picture is still intact by the end of season 5. With FTWD we are presented with a world in which this same catastrophe that is unfolding on the east coast is also gripping the west coast. We are introduced to unknown characters, unsure of how they will react in the most difficult of situations and when the time comes to kill or be killed, will they have the fortitude to do what needs to be done. The Walking Dead is sublime with its story lines but we sometimes forget it is a big world out there and we have only scratched the surface of the unlimited tales of personal intrigue, fighting Walkers, fighting humans and fighting ourselves.

Blunt Talk
August 22, 2015
9pm
Starz

Plot summary: Patrick Stewart stars as Walter Blunt. He is a newsman moving to the US from the UK to start a talk show, bringing his personal baggage along.

Why I am excited: This show looks like it will be a treat. This is a chance to really get to see Patrick Stewart in a regular comedic role, doing things we aren’t used to seeing him doing. Those familiar with some of Stewart’s voice antics on American Dad knows that we will be in for some off the wall, tongue in cheek comedy especially since this is a Seth Mcfarlane-produced show. Seeing Picard/ Professor Xavier doing blow will surely mess some heads up!   I can’t wait!!

The Bastard Executioner
Fall 2015
FX

Plot summary: In the 14th century, a knight in King Edward’s army decides to lay down his weapon and live a life of peace. When tragedy and violence finds him, of course he picks up arms in the form of a huge executioner’s sword.

Why I am excited: Kirk Sutter had a hit with Sons of Anarchy. Most are probably saying, “Just what we need, yet another period piece.” While not a lot is known about the plot, what we do know is that it depicts the UK in the 14th century as a dangerous place. The main character has just come back from fighting a way and will be involved with those who keep him from seeking his own peace. I am hoping that this show is a good hold-over since obviously, it’s going to be awhile before Game of Thrones comes back on. Also taking a look at that cast, some familiar faces from True Blood and Sons of Anarchy are making their way to this series as well.

Scream Queens
September 22, 2015
8pm
Fox

Plot summary: In 1995, a something went wrong when someone was pledging a sorority. 20 years later someone is killing people on the 20th anniversary of the crime

Why I am excited: Let’s start with the fact that Jamie Lee Curtis is on this show. I could stop there but then I would overlook some of the other talent appearing on this show such as Keke Palmer, Lea Michele, Emma Roberts, and more.   This show is working to tap into the same crowd that enjoyed Glee and American Horror Story and looks to be a dark comedy as well as a horror story. I am just hoping that it doesn’t lean on too many horror clichés as it progresses.

Minority Report
September 21, 2015
9pm
Fox

Plot summary: Based on the Spielberg blockbuster film of the same name, Minority Report follows the unlikely partnership between a man haunted by the future and a cop haunted by her past, as they race to stop the worst crimes of the year 2065 before they happen.

Why I am excited: The film version with Tom Cruise was released 13 years ago, if you can believe it. This show will strive to answer the question – what happened after the end of the film?  What happened to the “pre-cogs” Agatha and the twins?  This show has potential: it could be a great action-filled Sci-Fi show that wows us with technological possibilities and makes us think about the ever increasing rates of surveillance in the modern world. Or if could fall flat as an expensive (look at the effects in the trailer, ain’t no way that’s not expensive) crime drama set in the future because there’s too many regular crime dramas on TV right now. I’m super curious to see which way this will go.

Supergirl
October 26, 2015
8:30pm
CBS

Plot summary:  In the new drama from the world of DC Comics, Superman’s cousin, Kara Zor-El, embraces her superhuman abilities and becomes the hero she was always meant to be.

Why I am excited: We’re finally getting a female superhero story! There are so many reasons to be excited about this show. First, DC Comics has been very successful with its other superhero shows, Arrow and the Flash, so this show should be in good hands. Kara finally has a chance to step out from Clark Kent’s shadow and show the world what a great character she is. Although the show is painted in the hazy colors of Man of Steel, it looks to have a brighter tone like The Flash instead of the dark, gristly ones of Arrow and Gotham. So while the storyline may be a little tired (girl unhappy with her life finally figures out how to be herself), the show looks like it could inject some much needed fun and humor into the DC Comics universe.

What are some of other shows you are looking forward to?  Please tell us in the comments.
