Comic Hearsay – 7/21/15
Each week, this crew will be putting together a list of books that few of the residents of Comic Book Lovers are picking up and/or may be thinking are books that are getting hot and deserve a look at. Please remember that while Comic Book Speculation can profitable, it’s all opinion and meant for fun. We have no abilities to know how exactly the market will react and this is something we like to have fun with. Please let us know if you enjoy this segment and we will keep it going as long as possible. Big Shout out to the gang in the Comic Book Lovers group for this segment. With that said, here are this week’s picks.

Speculator Tip: I am so anticipating BvS that I have watched the trailer at least 5 times a day. I am studying it and picking it apart and now I am ready to speculate for all of you on it. Bruce Wayne is given 2 messages in the movie 1 claiming he let his family die written on a Newspaper about the devastation from MoS, the 2nd message is written on a Robin Suit that says “HaHa Jokes on you!” Both of these messages are being attributed to the Joker which seems like a good observation but if you go deeper it seems, at least to me, This person knows Bruce on a personal level. How awesome would it be for Red Hood/Jason Todd to make his appearance in this film and explode the doors open into the world of DC. Now Jason Todd’s 1st appearance has been heating up lately as it’s possible I’m not the only thinking this is where we are going. Batman 357 which also holds Killer Croc’s 1st shadowy appearance (another reason for the heat up) is where we 1st meet Jason Todd. A raw NM copy of issue 357 is probably going to run you around $100 but there’s more Firsts for Mr. Todd as when he 1st puts on the Robin outfit in Batman 368 hitting about $40 Raw NM. Also then how about his first appearance as Red Hood in Batman #635 hitting $30-$40 for a Raw NM copy. There’s on last issue for Jason Todd that seems significant and it’s the issue that introduces Batman and Jason post crisis in Batman 408 which if you’re lucky you can grab it for a couple of bucks on eBay but averages about $10 NM.

Back Issue Pictacular: Last week I talked about the Deadpool trailer and the comic I thought had room to grow…this week I have a pick based upon the Suicide Squad trailer. El Diablo vol 3 #1 from 2008…it sure looks like this is the version they are using in the movie and this is his first appearance. Currently found in dollar bins, this book has a ton of potential to grow. (Last sale on Ebay was 9.50 on 7-17, before release of SS Trailer averaged $1.50)

Back issue pick: With Secret Wars in full swing over at Marvel it’s time to start thinking about the universe afterwards. Marvel’s Bloodstone #1 can still be picked up for $1 but hitting between $12 and $25 on ebay regularly. The 1st appearance of Elsa Bloodstone will be sticking around after the Secret Wars run. Elsa is a bad ass vampire hunter with healing abilities as well as super strength and a great way for Marvel to continue to bring more women into the hobby.

Back Issue Tip: Besides Darkseid’s first appearance there are some other books that he has appeared in that are also very undervalued that commands your attention. The first of those comics are the Justice League of America’s #’s 183 – #185. When the JLA movie comes to fruition, it is “said” that THESE comics will be the storyline to the movie. Get these comics all day in Fine condition on Ebay for $10 a pop. Well worth the condition and money spent. Watch as Warner Bros. makes the announcement about Darkseid, these Fine copies you hold will go tenfold easily. The funny thing here is that the creator of Thanos; Jim Starlin, (yeah that guy) was the artist on 2 of the three covers! Ohhh, and Justice League 184 cover is simply amazing!

Back Issue Tip: DARKSEID MINIONS and lesser known characters
Glorius Godfrey- First Appearance: Forever People #3 – Pretty much a nobody until Darkseid sent him to Earth in the Legends storyline in the 80s which included the 1st modern Suicide Squad appearance. This was done to manipulate the Earth to turn against its Heroes and he did this disguised as a politician type character (pretty much read his wikipedia description and it sounds like what Warner Bros is trying to do in next year’s films)
Dessad- First Appearance Forever People #2: He’s Darkseid’s torturer and scientist. Darkseid tells him what to do and he tells the Parademons (storm troopers equivalent) what to do.
Big Barda- first appearance Mister Miracle #4: She’s more of an anti-hero who started out fighting for Darkseid then turned against him. She’s a really skilled warrior (her vs Wonder Woman would be a slobber knocker) and looks really cool.
Granny Goodness – first appearance Mister Miracle #2: She trains Darkseid’s army like a drill sergeant and is also leader of the Furies (Darkseid’s Special Forces Unit).
ALL can be found for under $10 bucks in decent shape.
As always, please remember speculation is mainly for fun, hopefully though we all make a little money as well.
