Zero Escape Volume 3 Announced
If there’s one thing we don’t lack these days, it’s video games. We have so many more genres and variety of games than ever. Shooters, Puzzles, RPGs, Strategies, and more. One genre that’s always caught my attention is the visual novel genre, the Ace Attorney series being one of the most visible examples of the genre for most gamers. While some do believe that the genre doesn’t quite count as a game, I’ve always been fond of what kind of storytelling you can tell in a game primarily fixed around a game told in novel form.
The Zero Escape series goes one step further and marries the Choose-Your-Own-Adventure style of format with puzzle gameplay into the visual novel format. The series first came into America under the title of 999: Nine Hours, Nine Persons, Nine Doors which became a hit. It’s later sequel Zero Escape: Virtue’s Last Reward was a similar hit, but for the last 3 years, the future of the series was uncertain due to low sales in Japan. But just recently, Aksys Games announced the final entry into the trilogy of the game: Zero Escape Volume 3.
While I won’t reveal any plot details (the series is best experienced with no spoilers or idea of any kind), I’ll say this much: it is easily one of the most inventive games of its type. Both games are extremely invested in both character development and in an expansive plot. Anything can happen, and even the meta-idea behind multiple endings is a factor into the conclusion of both games. If you want to see a game that challenges your skills, your intellectual capacity, your emotional capacity to care as well as your acceptance for the limits of what a game can do, this may well be the series for you. While a lot of games are sequels and remakes nowadays, Zero Escape goes higher and further, attempting to tell a different kind of game. Playing with time, space, gameplay, standards, and every other factor that goes into playing a game. Go and check it out now, before you miss the end in 2016.
