Cosplay Spotlight: Mommy and Me Cosplay
By Valerie Complex
Jannelle is fairly new to cosplaying as she just started in 2014. In a short amount of time, it is obvious that Mommy and Me cosplay has become wildly popular among other cosplaying enthusiast. She is currently studying nursing and lives in Southern California with her two adorable daughters.

Characters Cosplayed: Harley and Catwoman
Who or what inspired you and your children to want to cosplay?
No one really inspired me to cosplay I’ve always wanted to do it and finally found the time to do so. As far as my girls, they saw how fun constructing a costume was and wanting in on the fun. I figured since they loved crafting so much that I would make it a family tradition.
What do you do when you aren’t cosplaying?
I’m actually in the Registered Nurse program right now so I study haha.
Which character is your favorite to cosplay? What about your daughters? Who are their favorite characters to cosplay?
My favorite character to cosplay so far is Harley from Harley’s Revenge. My youngest daughter is all about Catwoman and my oldest enjoys Poison Ivy.
What costumes have provided the biggest challenge and rewards so far and why?
The costume that was the most challenging… hmmm.. Catwoman for sure. I don’t know how many times I put it on, took it off, cut here cut there, put it on to only take it off and re-do it. The cowl alone took me a month to make. I even had to take that a part a few times lol. In the end, it was most rewarding because it was what started Mommy and Me Cosplay.
What is the best advice you would give someone new to cosplaying? And someone that wants to include their children?
The best advice I could give someone who is new is to just cosplay for you. Don’t worry about what others have to say about your outfit. Cosplaying should be based on what and how you want to do it. There are a lot of judgmental people out there but WAY more nice and friendly cosplayers within the scene. And when it comes to involving your children just know that you should allow them to pick the theme or else they won’t enjoy it. Don’t force your kids to jump into an outfit to match you. Also, when you go to a con with the kids just make sure your outfit is comfortable and you are able to get around carrying all the comics and toys they buy lol.
Do you get to travel the country to different conventions? Or are your local to one area?
As of right now no, but I plan to in the future.
What show can fans expect to see you at next?
Well, Comikaze and LBCC for sure. SDCC is still in the air.

These are brilliant! I love seeing kids get into character like this. Bravo!
