Cosplay Spotlight with Brandie B!!!

Where are you from originally or reside currently: Baltimore
How long you have been cosplaying: Since 2010
Other Characters cosplayed: Ms. Marvel, Black Cat, Mockingbird, Saul Goodman, Rose Tyler
Website or facebook fan page:  Bad Wolf Cosplay

1. How did you get into cosplay?

I have a theater background and always loved being other people. I can be painfully shy at times and cosplay was a way to force myself to be outgoing. When I decided to cosplay for the first time as Ms. Marvel at the 2010 Baltimore Comic-Con, I was nervous as all heck. Then it subsided. Strangers would come up to me and want to spar for the camera or I’d hear, “Hey, Carol!” from the crowd. It was a revelation. It was like I had found my tribe.

2. Best costume that you pulled off that you thought you could not. What were some of the reactions that you got on it?

Absolutely Saul Goodman. I’ve never cosplayed a guy before and quite frankly, my vanity was seriously getting in the way. I felt really insecure about having no makeup, cleavage or even hair. I didn’t want that insecurity to hinder such a deliciously smarmy character. I approached it as the ultimate challenge and I’d like to think I succeeded. I received a lot of shout outs from Breaking Bad fans and the best was that I spoke to many of you on the convention floor and you had no idea it was me! Now, I love doing Saul and look forward to wearing flat shoes and loose fitting clothes at a convention!

3. How has cosplaying changed since you started?

It’s definitely garnered more attention, which may be due to certain television shows. I just think society has embraced the nerd community. Now it’s cool to be into comics and games and sci-fi shows. Those who maybe felt ashamed about wanting to dress up as My Little Pony can find normalcy in it through media and the internet. Let your freak flag fly!

4. What are your thoughts on sexual harassment and cosplay and what can men and women do better to quell some of the issues surrounding it?

I’m probably the last person that should be asked this. I have never encountered a situation where I’ve felt uncomfortable or feared for my safety. I’m also not easily offended and very self-deprecating, so a lot slides off my shoulders. Black Cat is overtly sexual and will use that to get what she wants. I could never act that way at a con though. I have to tone it down quite a bit, otherwise I would be guilty of sexually harassing fans. More importantly, there are children around. Now, that costume can be pretty revealing but that’s not an open invite to place your hands on me inappropriately. You ask me for a pic, I say yes, and we have our arms around each other – no problem. I generally ask Spidey cosplayers if it’s ok to be hands-on in pics. I wouldn’t want to put anyone in the situation where they felt uncomfortable. It’s basic consideration for other people.
