Brick Fest Live: If you build it, they will come.
By Joe Thacker
One of the great things about geek culture is that you can enjoy the same themes and stories in so many ways. Comic books, animation, movies and even toys. Just look around your friendly neighborhood comic book store and see all the non-paper merchandise that fill the shelves. One of the most versatile toys available are the Legos building sets. Of course, the Lego Movie that was out this year helped.
People who spend a chunk of their time on Legos had a chance to meet at Brickfest Live at the Timonium Fairgrounds in Baltimore, MD. This travelling show provides different venues for this construction toy that we have known and loved for ages.
This event is the creation of Chad Collins. I was able to talk to him briefly. He figures the attendance for this event is 13,000 which is typical. And like at a con, they are very diverse.
If you’re a kid or have some, this is a great place to visit. If you’re a hard core collector, this is a must see. If you have a passing interest, stop by and prepare to have your mind blown.
The majority of the attendees were kids and most of the floor had activities for them including mini golf and race car derbies.
Not to mention, there is a sub culture within. A talented few have dedicated themselves to creating some of the most amazing models. A couple of them were there to show some of their works. One of the largest displays was from Teachfleet. Students created several accurate models of ocean sailing vessels.
For gamers, there was an area where you can try out a few Lego themed video games.
There were also some dealers selling kits, collectibles and even custom made parts. Some are rare and expensive. Many of the kits have a pop culture theme, much like you would find at a comic book convention. The most prevalent was Star Wars, but that may be because Legos have been making them for years.
There are many websites and Youtube channels about Legos. One of the major contributors is The Brick Show. They review the models that are available. Some of their fans got a chance to meet with them to see what new products they have.
Again, if you want to see if it’s coming near you, click here to go to BrickFest Live, to see if an event is coming.
