Is Diablo III Ultimate Evil edition worth a triple dip?
I can remember the countless hours I spent over a decade ago playing Diablo II and how we waited for Diablo III. And there oh so many clones of Diablo that was released in that time.
I remember when Diablo III was released on PC and the headaches it caused when the servers crashed and how it took a few days to get them up and running. I remember too putting many hours into that game once that issue was resolved but…not as many as I wanted because I had heard that a console version was coming. Then of course no sooner than the console version dropped, there was evil whispers of it coming for the next gen systems with improved graphics and **GASP** everything from the expansion pack!!!! BLIZZARD TAKE MY MONEY NOW!!!
I think I may have just offered up an answer to the title of this review. If you are a Diablo fan and gravitated away from playing on the PC, the PS4 in my opinion is the best way to finally get this classic game on console and really have the most fun out of it.
For the un-initiated, Diablo III is an action RPG that sticks your character be it a Barbarian, Demon Hunter, Monk plus 3 other class of your choosing and sends them into battle against hordes of monsters. The fun of it of course is not in the kill itself but the loot that drops that ranges from basic to rare and legendary and some are upgradeable. In short, this was Borderlands before ever there was a Borderlands. In this package not only do you get the regular game but you get the recently released for PC expansion as well at $60.
Rather than go back and review the game, in which there are tons of reviews abound, let’s talk about why you may want to consider upgrading to next gen if you have a next gen system particularly the PS4.
Graphics – The game is on par with PCs running this at high or as close to ultra high settings with excellent textures and lighting. Framerate is smooth even with huge mobs on the screen and lighting affects going off all around. It’s a huge improvement over the last gen consoles and shows that Diablo III can compete with its PC sibling.
Sound – Most of us who play PC games may not always consider hooking up their PC to their HDTV and sound system so imagine my surprise when with the PS4 pumping the sounds out via 7.1 surround with HD-DTS kicked in made for an amazing sound stage. The booms and clangs of war, the agonized screams and the moaning and more was very well done.
Controls – The controls still handle as well as the last gen version which is what made this so popular on the consoles so no changes from that.
The bonus of next-gen cross platform saves – Besides the graphical boost, the next gen systems do allow you the one time ability to move your save from any platform to another provided that you set it up via Blizzard’s website account. The transition was seamless for me and I was up and running from my last save point with no problem. It’s a shame that there was no way to prot my PC save but nothing is perfect.
The Extra bonus for Sony – If you never bothered to remote play your Vita with anything on PS4, now may be a good time to try this. Finally, you can play Diablo III without being stuck sitting at your TV or PC monitor. And if you are geek savvy enough, you now have the ability to remotely play anywhere are you are with an adequate wifi connection. The controls may get a little cramped at times but this is the one edge that beats out the X-Box One.
If you are a Diablo III fan, there is no way you can pass on this version of the game and it ranks high in my book.
4.5 out of 5 stars
