“The wages of Sin is Death.” ~ Romans 6:23
There is nothing like a blockbuster hit that is all hype. Movies advertise the best part of the movie on television in ads, hoping this will draw people in. It does, but then word of mouth will either help the film or destroy it. An old example of the latter is Battlefield Earth. Comic books have also taken this type of advertising to heart, planning the storylines months in advance. I was eagerly anticipating the first issue of Original Sin and I wasn’t disappointed, but I wasn’t blown away either.
Issue two continued to compel me to read further. I already have the question, “Who shot the Watcher?”, but I don’t have the answer. Nominally I would wait to read this book last. I tend to save what I think will be the best for last and after possibly reading The Woods #2, I decided I would stay in my favorite playground and find out some answers from Marvel.
Mike Deodato is outdoing himself. The pages are dark and gritty, very fitting for the feel of the comic. Jason Aaron is holding his own too, but I am not quite sure that he was the one for this book. I almost wish either Mark Waid or Brian Michael Bendis would have sharpened their teeth on the plot, but maybe it is the cast that seems a bit choppy, or maybe it’s because Marvel planned multiple spin offs. And then there is Orb. He might have been interesting when he was created for Marvel Team up #15, but to me he just seemed…voyeuristic. His once eyeball-looking helmet is now an actual eyeball and he (SPOILER) unleashes the watcher’s (hey, I said Spoiler) Eye as a World War II private would unleash a grenade.
Here is the kicker, one that I heard only through rumors and then seeing the possibility to the beginning of this outcome. And if you are still reading, you were warned twice, so there will not be a third (SPOILER) warning. Thor has a sister. Who could it be? Could all those times he got close to Sif now be ruined? Will the Enchantress become Odin’s heir, or will the newly acquired Angela be the newest Norse myth and the first Asgardian since…well the Leif Erikson and his Vikings discovered America. And who isn’t happy that Nick Fury is back in all his splendor. I can’t wait to see what happens with him in issue 4… oh wait, never mind.
Marvel is creating a blockbuster, and I feel the Original Sin story line might not be the hit they are hoping for, but I do believe it is the cost of admission to the big event. Bring it on Marvel. I am Watching.

Iron Fist: The Living Weapon #3

Writer: Kaare Kyle Andrews
Artist: Kaare Kyle Andrews
Reviewer: Ray Willis
Filled with rage Danny Rand, the Immortal Iron Fist seeks to find the enemy behind the attack on him. Journeying the through the portal back to K’un Lun Danny finds the once beloved Immortal City in ruins after Davos, the Steel Serpent leads his rebellion with this new unknown threat of cyber ninjas. The story goes back and forth with Danny Rand’s past and present. Giving more incite on what he has went through to become the soon to be known Immortal Iron Fist. His past reveals the early stages of him training with Lei Kung The Thunderer, telling him to fight back or be thrown back into the snow where he will be eaten by the wolves that ate his mother. Danny doesn’t want to fight but he has to in order to survive. Switching back to the present we get to see a fight at the hospital that the injured monk is at between nurses and Davos’ henchmen. He sends some creature to find the monk but Brenda saves her for the time being. While back in the destroyed city of K’un Lun, Danny seeks for Lei Kung but to see his former master on his knees beheaded. A flashback shows that Lei Kung explains that all death deals with the heart but if you protect the heart you would never die. Danny lashes out a the tree of immortality and is sent flying by the Prince of Orphans and sees a blast from the past.
I recently read the last two issue of Iron fist and I saw the old comic book crumbled paper when Danny’s past was shown and I really like it. I haven’t seen something like that before and showing during past sequences was a brilliant idea to give the footage from an old camera feel. The story itself isn’t bad and much darker but Danny is pretty fired up about vengeance, rage, and hate. The story is pretty heavy with the words of death thrown about. Danny even blaming his former master over him ruining his life. I can see losing his parents was traumatic but he is really being a dick. The art in the present scenes are good through and the action sequences are really good. With a surprise ending for Danny we will get to see the what happens to him now to see a face from the past. This series is really good, a bit darker take on the character but a nice action comic by Marvel.
