So I finally discovered Dr. Who.

It finally happened.  One of the best kept (non) secrets in sci-fi finally got my attention.
Some of my friends think that I must have sold my soul to the Devil while others are embracing me for opening my eyes to another source of geekiness.  I will admit that some things you take so long to get around to doing or watching that sometimes you wonder how you went without it.  I may not be quite there yet but I watched enough of it that I feel as if it could grow on me as I watch more episodes.

So what took me so long?

I think I am one of those people who was intimidated by the history and length of the shows.  We are talking about a franchise that has been on since before I was born and every time I tried to get into it, it just wasn’t doing anything for me at that time. The of course there other distractions that were out at the time.  Battlestar Galactica was one of those things and the funny part is, at the time BSG was on, Dr. Who was the lead in show when SyFy was still SCIFI and one would think that I would have jumped on being that I could get 2 hrs. of geekdom in and be happy but it just didn’t work out.  Recently however, with the conventions I have been to, and the cosplayers I have witnessed, there is a strong following for Dr. Who so part of my decision was based on seeing what all the hype was about and maybe, just maybe be a part of the conversation.

What are my impressions so far?

First off thank goodness for Netflix and I think that was another reason as to why I decided to watch now.  Netflix provided me with easy access to watch the show at any given time.  I didn’t have to spend time hunting the DVD down or purchasing them.  I am still going in unsure of my commitment and I like the ‘try before you buy’ option so streaming it costs me nothing.   After I inquired on facebook, a lot of my friends were more than willing to point me in the direction I needed to go in order to catch up.  Again a show with 40+ years of history was a daunting task if I needed to jump on in the beginning but I was able to start with the return of the series with Christopher Eccleston as the ninth Doctor and Rose.  After 3 episodes, while I am not 100% sold, I enjoyed what I saw.

It’s not a difficult premise to understand as it primarily tells about a mysterious Time Lord who jumps around in time saving civilizations, fighting bad guys and just generally having adventures that are wild and sometimes wacky.  In a sense, it almost reminds me a bit of Star Trek.  Once you get the premise of what is going on, you can just get right into it.  Even for the 3 episodes I have seen so far, the technical value is pretty good and not as cheesy as I thought it was going to be.  I enjoy Eccleston and Billie Piper as Rose although a lot of my friends are chomping at the bit for me to see David Tennant’s run as the Doctor.  It’s coming people!  Let me get this season down first!!!

In conclusion?

If I managed to get 3 episodes down yesterday instead of playing GTA V, I think that says something. I will do what I can to get ‘current’.  I remember a few years ago I binge watched 24 and it was so well worth it.  I may not be able to do the same with Doctor Who but at least now I get to see what the “who-pla”  is now all about.
