Aitch’s Next Issue Comic reviews week of 8/21/2013

*AS ALWAYS BE MINDFUL THAT THERE WILL BE SLIGHT SPOILERS, READ AT YOUR OWN PERIL!!**

Yeah it’s been a DC Comics kind of week but hey, there was some good stuff out this week!

He Man and the Masters of the Universe #5

Writer: Giffen, Keith
Artist: Mhan, Pop
Cover Artist: Benes, Ed

Well let’s start off with the old cliche’ of this ain’t your daddy’s He-Man. Hopefully if you have been reading this for the past year, you would know that the biggest threat to Eternia is not Skeletor but Hordak and that this isn’t the cutesy He-man most of us remember from the 80’s. This has been a blood and guts affair since this was reintroduced this last year and in these past 5 issues with the relaunch of this title. In this issue we learn why Adam and Teela were separated at birth and by whom and also what this has to do with Despara.  This issue revealed a lot about the true nature of the sorceress and what Hordak has planned for Eternia and it’s not pretty.  Also enjoyable is the banter between Mech-a-Neck and He-Man as they venture off to save Teela and of course, with no plan. This issue is a sleeper in the DC Comics realm of things and you aren’t reading it, you are missing out.

Batman and Nightwing 23

Writer: Tomasi, Peter J.
Artist: Gleason, Patrick
Cover Artist: Gray, Mick

In this issue, we see Bruce Wayne as he is still grappling with coping with Damien’s death. And from the looks of it, he has reached Stage 3 of dealing with his grief, “If only”.   We watch as Bruce fails time and time again in a VR simulation (400+ attempts) to save Damien, showing that he couldn’t do it by himself.  Amazingly Dick and Alfred take it and pass in their own ways.  How did they do it?  Pick this issue up and find out. This is a good story showing us that although bruce is making progression with his loss, he still has a way to go and then next month…the villains take over.

Trinity Wars continues and everyone battles for Pandora’s box as no one is able to really handle it.  Ok, so after a shaky start, Trinity Wars is turning out to be a nifty event.  Unlike AvX, this event hasn’t wasted time in explaining what’s going on, and who is involved and this issue continues that.   The heroes find out about Waller’s reason for forming the JLA, we see a good mix of all the characters interacting in a frantic race to possess the box and Zatanna is a great showcase in this issue.  But what’s really cool is when we find out about Shazam nearly being hoodwinked by Constantine and what happens when Shazam gets his hands on the box he transforms and looks a little familiar.  But all is not done.

This has been a solid event and even though it’s not a normal pullof mine, it’s worthy if only to follow this event.
