Review Brew: Mystery Girl #1

Writer: Paul Tobin

Art: Alberto J. Alburquerque

Colors: Marissa Louise

Mystery Girl Trine Hampstead went to a party one night. She met a girl, had some fun. She woke up two days later with no memory since the party and with the ability to know…everything. Now she spends her days as a sidewalk detective in London, telling her clientele exact details to their most pressing questions. She is happy to help everyone, from friends and neighbors, to the local beat cops to even the poor dog who had his favorite toy thrown away by a mean spirited child. It is a satisfying way to spend her days and make some money while she is at it.

Warning: Mild Spoilers Below

Between helping a woman come to terms with her missing in action husband to bring his remains home to rest and assisting her flamboyant private detective friend find answers, Trine crosses paths with Geneticist Jovie Ghslain. She explains that her research team found a perfectly preserved Mammoth in the frozen wastelands of Siberia but were caught in a storm and succumbed to the elements. Ghslain wants Trine to tell her the location of the Mammoth but she refuses. Her condition for disclosing the beasts’ whereabouts is to join Jovie on her expedition. Little does Jovie know that Trine is keeping secret her real motivation for the journey. To complicate matters, unknown assailants are following the ladies on their quest with intentions that are anything but good.

Paul Tobin is a master storyteller and Mystery Girl will only add to his mythos. He paces the debut issue with a smart exhibit of Trine’s powers while getting a sense of her fun, flirty, yet steely personality which lets the reader engage with the character instantaneously. The bigger picture and the conflict are set up with ease and will cause anticipation for #2’s release in 2016. Alberto Alburquerque and Marissa Louise do a masterful job with the art and colors with a high attention to detail and perfect use of contrasting shades and colors. Dark Horse has another solid title on their hands and I applaud the creators on their efforts.
