Everything you know is a lie
J’onn J’onzz or Martian Manhunter is one of my favorite DC characters. He is one of the most powerful characters and telepaths in the DC universe. J’onzz has been on a few teams in the new 52, but I’ve been wanting a standalone series. When DC decided to actually give him his own solo series in the new 52, I was eager to see where it will go. After reading the preview for Martian Manhunter #1, I couldn’t wait to read it.
Martian Manhunter thinks he’s the last Martian, but he is wrong. After crash landing a plane, J’onzz is given an ominous message from another Martian.
Rob Williams gives us an interesting look at Martian Manhunter and the other Martians. The story starts off fast, but flows well and maintains a good pace throughout the issue. We learn more about J’onzz and not just being a hero, but also a weapon. The threat of the other Martians is real. As they create various acts of terror happening across the globe. The only thing we do know what their plans are is in the form of “The Epiphany”.
When the action dies down, we learn about some minor characters who may not even know they are human. The stories were short but meshed well with what is going on in the plot.
Eddy Barrows surprised me with his art on this title. The characters look good and the action gets intense. Seeing the Martian Manhunter turn into a giant Dragon and save people was amazing. Before he goes full Dragon, having the panel blend with his transformation was cool. Even the more dark moments in the issue worked. The inks by Eber Ferreira adds more depth to the characters. The colors used, created a nice look to everything, even the vicious looking aliens.
Rob Williams set up a nice story with an interesting character. Showing us that there’s more to J’onn J’onzz is always refreshing. Having a threat that is all over the world is going to be challenging to deal with. There is a character that appears at the beginning that may play a part in all this. The story captured my attention and the art reinforces the issue. As a first issue, it was a great read and had enough for me to keep reading it.
