Review Brew: Judge Dredd #30

Writer: Duane Swierczynski

Artist: Nelson Daniel

Crowd Control Conclusion

It’s been thirty long issues, but Judge Dredd has come to an end with this latest chapter. As the citizens want to see Chief Justice Cal executed, Dredd tries to make it in time to save the day. With all that, he is still not deterred in doing his duties to protect his city. Former Special Judicial Squad Verrity still wants to bring in the Chief Justice. This is not one of Anderson’s best days in another person’s body, at all. The writing is good, as the dialogue is frantic but keeps you engaged to the story. Dredd’s dialogue is straight to the point as he tries to take control of the situation. You can understand why the citizens want to lynch this person for what he has done. A couple of Street Judges sit by, whether to help or not save this despicable person. One decides to do the latter. Verrity has some fun dialogue as she logs everything that has happened. There is also a  big reveal toward the end. There was a bit of fourth wall breaking which was quite clever on how to end the series after everything that has happened.

The art has been great throughout. Nelson Daniel has done an incredible job of capturing this city. The action flows well and keeps you along for the ride with lots of blood through the journey. The action during a short chase was fun which I would have loved if it went on longer. The line work looks great on the characters which outlines their features as well as their attire. The color palette used really makes the scenes work as it highlights the various tones being juggled within the issue.  The use of yellow and oranges work well on the sound effects highlighted.

This was a good issue with great art that has been very consistent. The dialogue is fast and to the point but gives you a breather to make you feel the impact of the story. Swierczynski delivered a nice wrap up to this last arc. The interaction of characters worked well together to serve their purpose. I didn’t find anything wrong with the art and has been consistent with the series as a whole. Characters look great with distinct styles and colors made the panels look great. This was definitely one of my favorite series that IDW has put out. Judge Dredd can still be found in the ongoing  2000AD programs.
