Princess Leia marks the last part of Marvel’s first wave of Star Wars comics, all of which have been excellent so far. Leia’s solo book continues bringing a quality story and fantastic art.

Taking place just after the first movie (as in, seconds after the medal ceremony) Leia isn’t too happy. Alderaan has been destroyed, along with her parents. Eager to help the Rebels find a new base, she is instead told she’s too valuable for field work. Meanwhile, rumors spread through the Rebel forces of an “Ice Princess” too cold to take the time to mourn for those lost in the destruction of Alderaan. Mark Waid is a maser of the craft, and his story telling continues to impress.

It’s great to see a slightly different part of the Star Wars universe explored here, much like in Darth Vader. It’s fun to see new characters like Rebel pilot Evaan interact with Leia, as well as fan-favorites such as Admiral Ackbar. Focusing the story into 4 parts has also helped streamline the story, and made this first issue feel full of life and character. Within the Star Wars Expanded Universe, I had never followed much of Leia’s solo or feature stories. Here, I was reminded that Leia is more then a damsel in distress with a quick wit – she’s also a badass in her own right, and wants to fight alongside the Rebels.

Complimenting a great story is art from Terry Dodson and Jordie Bellaire. Dodson’s art is simultaneously whispy and solid. I’e been a fan of his for a long time, and the Star Wars universe seems ripe with beautiful vistas, aliens and star ships for him to draw. Everything is both familiar and new to longtime fans – I’ve never seen Star Wars portrayed in a way like this. Bellaire’s colors are also fantastic, with solid choices that help the art leap off the page. Overall, this may be my favorite of the Star Wars books so far; the only thing not fantastic is that this story will end in 3 more months.
