The Review Brew: Find #1
Writer: Sam Read
Artist: Alex Cormack
Reviewer: John Amenta
Find, from ComixTribe, is a one shot story, fueled by the power of childhood curiosity and adventure. The sense that we all had at one point that anything was possible, long before the realities and responsibilities of adulthood came out of the woods and stomped on our wonderment. This story would feel at home amongst many films of the 1980’s, when so many great movies revolved around the idea that believing is enough to make something magical happen. If you told me Sam Read, the writer, was a huge fan of films such as Explorers, or E.T., I wouldn’t be surprised one bit.
Teddy is a young, neglected boy, invisible to his parents. His invisibility is his ally, as he sneaks out unnoticed one night to investigate a flaming object that fell from the sky. What Teddy finds is amazing. This being a one shot, giving away what he finds would be like telling half the story. The story is bookended by an old Teddy reminiscing on his death bed, about how that night changed his life for the better, and set him on many adventures. Find is a fairly straightforward read, but is flawlessly executed.
Read does a good job of wearing his influences on his sleeve, while crafting a wholly original tale. Artist Alex Cormack marries the mundane and spectacular elements of the story deftly, and his use of colors is standout work. These are two names to keep an eye out for.
Find is important in one other sense. This is a book that adults can enjoy, but should be given to younger readers. It’s funny that in a medium initially aimed at children, so many comics are inaccessible to younger readers, whether it be through content or other reasons. Find is a ready made adventure that will satisfy any kid who still has that spark of wonder we were all born with. Not to mention the adult who has kept a bit of the magic alive as well.
